Rough Edges relies on volunteers in order to open. Those interested need to complete a seven week training course prior to volunteering with us. Once people have completed the training they are able to volunteer either at night or during the day. Mainly a volunteers’ role at Rough Edges is to provide hospitality and a listening ear to patrons. Skilled volunteers in art, law and fundraising are greatly welcomed and often needed.
The Rough Edges Volunteer Training Course runs twice per year. Generally, one course takes place from March-April and the other from September-October. The course involves one full Saturday from 10am – 5pm and six Monday night workshops from 7.00pm – 9.30pm. Topics covered are:
Saturday Training: Introduction, Urban Walk, patron and volunteer stories and Jesus as a model for what we do at Rough Edges.
Workshop One: Listening
Workshop Two: Homelessness
Workshop Three: Living with mental illness
Workshop Four: Alternatives to violence
Workshop Five: Living with addiction
Workshop Six: Scenarios of what to expect when volunteering at Rough Edges
