Our Training

Why is Training Necessary

Our training program is designed to give volunteers techniques and methods to operate in rough edges in a way that ensures a safe, respectful and welcoming environment.

Caring for others and yourself

At the course you will learn how to look after yourself and others who are dealing with difficult emotional issues. Often as a volunteer you might find yourself in situations which are confronting and distressing – learning about self-care is an important aspect of preparing yourself to volunteer.

Dealing with difficulties

Sometimes at Rough Edges we have to deal with challenging behaviour. We teach you techniques that can assist you when dealing with someone who is angry or on a drug induced high.  We use non-violent communication (NVC) strategies to do this. NVC is useful anywhere in your life where you want to reduce conflict and misunderstandings and improve outcomes for yourself and others.

Understanding the issues

It is important that our volunteers have some understanding of the issues that impact our community. We invite several special guests in who will share their stories and experience with living with mental illness, addiction and homelessness. We also have guests from other agencies who talk about the work they do to address some of these problems.

Attendance at a Volunteer Information Night is a pre-requisite for applying for Volunteer Training.
