Reflections from a volunteer

Susie Solomon

Susie has been volunteering at Rough Edges for about seven years. She had been looking for somewhere to volunteer where she could really feel that she was helping.

As she speaks, you can hear that she has a heart for those who are facing difficulties in life.

I like the interaction. I like giving back. I know the community. For the average dude, they see people and judge them. One look is enough. But these are people who have a name. They may be homeless or struggle with addictions or the mental health issues, but they have the same desires we all do.

It’s a learning curve that you can learn so much yourself. It is not a one way street, you are learning to adapt and grow.

We used to offer toast only. It was always the same - lots of butter! They could choose vegemite, jam etc. But now with food coming from OzHarvest* we try to give them what they want. I know we’re all about connection, but for people who are hungry, food is very important.

It is a very interesting place. They like the way it is, as rough as it is. They are comfortable there. It is their space.

*And other wonderful partners like Hope Hospitality Partners, Kids Giving Back, SCEGGS and St Mark’s.
